Introduction To The History Of Israel

B.Th. English · Source syllabus with original formative learning enrichment

Course description

Bible is not a textbook of history; it can be trusted when it addresses historical concerns. Our study will be designed to equip you with a thorough knowledge of the history of God's chosen people from the days of Abraham to the return from captivity. Emphasis is given to understanding Israel within the broad context of the Near Eastern world. This course intends to provide the student with an understanding of the historical events that surround the ancient Israelite people, noting how the nation grew into prosperity before it fell to moral impurity and the impending judgment of God.

Course objectives

The students, by the end of the course, should:

Have a thorough knowledge of the various stages of ancient Israel within the context of ancient Near Eastern culture and context.

Focus on the Biblical witness and how the people came to understand their history as divinely guided and what that meant for their relationship with God.

Understand the historical development of the period, emphasis will be placed upon the Biblical texts that are representative of the life of the people and how those texts inform our lives of Christian faithfulness and our understanding of God.

To impart knowledge of the faith and life of the people of Israel, and to help students to draw challenges from their life, faith and hope in the present context.
