Contemporary Theologies of Mission

M.Th. Missiology · Source syllabus with original formative learning enrichment

Course description

The course is a study on the contemporary trends in mission theology focusing on the theological development from the early 1960s to the present. Students are to identify and engage themselves in an in-depth study of issues and themes of mission theology and the Missiology of selected well- known Missiologists and theologians. The course, therefore, has two major components: (1) issues and themes in contemporary mission theology; and (2) the mission theology of selected influential mission thinkers and theologians. Based on the two components, the course may be offered in two separate terms/semesters or in one term/semester. Major emphasis is given on the Asian/Indian theologies of mission.

Course objectives

To introduce students into the contemporary trends and the shaping of theologies of mission and their contextual molds.

To engage the students with the mission theologies of major thinkers (selected) of various theological persuasions.

To help the students in identifying and interacting with contemporary issues facing Christian mission.

To sharpen the analytical tools of students in constructing and articulating their own theology of mission.

Host a comparative mission-theology symposium

Choose a source-listed theme and faculty-approved thinkers. Compare claims, contexts and evidence in a seminar portfolio, preserve the source's selection minima and record a peer-response revision. Confirm actual selections and teaching terms with faculty rather than scheduling them yourself.
